Mrs. Smith, a 67-year-old woman, presents to you as a new patient. She says that she was last seen by a dentist 2 years ago. She has since moved, and now presents for a new patient examination. Her chief complaint is swelling and discomfort in her left mandibular vestibule.

Mrs. Smith had no other dental complaints. She reports to be otherwise healthy, reporting no systemic disease. She takes no medications and has no known drug allergies.
