The pathologist’s report should have told you that this lesion was probably a neurofibroma. As such, Mrs. Smith was scheduled for surgery to excise this lesion. She was also informed of the likelihood that she would be numb along the distribution of her left mental nerve.

Mrs. Smith was then taken to the operating room and a general anesthetic was performed. The lesion was isolated and removed  with a small segment of mental nerve on

either side of the tumor. There were no surgical complications. Following the procedure, Mrs. Smith experienced left mental anesthesia, as anticipated.

The tumor was macroscopically and microscopically examined by a pathologist. The pathologist’s findings were as follows:

“Specimen is a 3.6x2.0x1.1cm multinodular, rubbery tumor with a pale white surface. The tumor is well circumscribed. In some areas the tumor has a myxoid stroma.

“The tumor is cellular, although not hypercellular, and comprised of spindle-shaped cells with thin, delicate cytoplasm.

These cells are separated by thin, loose stroma. No visible mitotic figures or cellular atypia is present. Diagnosis: neurofibroma.
